DALLAS -- Tyler Seguin didnt realize he had become a part of Dallas Stars history until he looked up at the video board. Thats when he learned he had tied a team record with his third hat trick of the season, joining Mike Modano and Bill Guerin. Seguin also had two assists Thursday night as the Stars beat the Vancouver Canucks 6-1. "Until I saw it on the board, I wasnt aware," he said. He was especially pleased to be in the company of Modano, whose No. 9 will be retired at the Stars game Saturday. "Its awesome," Seguin said. "I talk a lot with him when he comes to game. He tells me a couple of things about my game." Seguin, the team leader with 29 goals, has had two of the NHLs six five-point games this season. Jamie Benn, Alex Goligoski and Ryan Garbutt also scored for Dallas, which built a 5-0 lead. Kari Lehtonen made 32 saves, and Benn and Rich Peverley each had two assists. Seguin scored twice in the first period, and completed his hat trick at 12:53 of the third by squeezing the puck through a narrow opening past Canucks backup goalie Jacob Markstrom. Vancouvers Zac Dalpe scored at 18:15 of the second period. Dallas solidified its hold on the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, improving to 9-3-2 in their last 14 goals. The fading Canucks, 11th in the West, dropped to 1-10-1 in their last 12 and fell four points behind Dallas. Vancouver coach John Tortorella said he didnt believe his team quit. "I still think there is the people in (the locker room) that can help us pull through this and were going to keep on going about it each day." Canucks goalie Eddie Lack stopped only 12 of 17 shots before Markstrom replaced him. Markstrom, acquired earlier this week in the trade that sent Roberto Luongo to Florida, had four saves. "It feels like were ready when the game starts, and then we kind of just collapsed today," Lack said. "For me, I kind of just have to look at myself tonight ... and have to be better." Benn put in a rebound 2:57 into the game after Lack had stopped Seguins backhand. Seguin scored the second goal on a power play. He took a pass from Alex Chiasson behind the Canucks defence and fired into the upper right corner from in front of the net. "That was a big message before tonights game, was our starts," Seguin said. The Stars had been outscored 6-0 in the first period of their previous three games. Even at 2-0, the lead appeared safe against a team that has scored only nine goals in its last eight games. Seguin made it 3-0 at 11:59, taking a pass off the boards from Peverley and turning and one-timing a shot between Lack and the right goal post. "The one he rips from the wall in the first period found a way to go in," Dallas coach Lindy Ruff said. "You could just say its never a bad play to get it on net. "His late one, for the hat trick, you wonder how it goes in, but it went in. (Vernon Fiddler) said on the bench, Those never go in for me. It is funny how sometimes goal scorers find ways to put them in the holes." The shots on goal, eight for each team, did not reflect Dallas domination of the first period. The Stars began the second on a 5-minute power play. Vancouvers Zack Kassian received a major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct for a hit on Brenden Dillon in front of the Canucks bench with 1:30 left in the first period. With that man advantage, Dallas took a 4-0 lead at 2:20 of the second. Ray Whitney passed from behind the goal line to defenceman Goligoski low in the right faceoff circle. He shot into the near side of the net. Seguin assisted on the goal. At 12:08, Goligoski passed across to Garbutt on the left side, and his goal increased the lead to 5-0. Goligoski said, "We came in more focused. We knew these guys have had a tough time scoring goals, so we needed to bury a few early." Dalpe scored a power-play goal late in the period to get the Canucks on the board with a shot that hit Lehtonen as he tried to recover his position. Taman, the Saskatchewan Roughriders general manager, signed an extension that keeps him under contract with the CFL club through the 2017 season. Last month, Taman re-signed Chamblin as the clubs head coach for the next four seasons. "Corey Chamblin is a big part of making me look good," Taman told reporters Wednesday. "I had a lot of faith in him when we hired him and he continues to show that." However, Taman also received a promotion, adding the title of vice-president of football operations to his job description. "Im excited about this," said Jim Hopson, the Riders president and chief executive officer. "I think we have a good team, a good organization and weve got some people who are very important to making us a good organization and Brendan is one of them. "We need continuity so with Brendan and Corey under contract through 2017 I feel really good as I look to the future." Chamblin guided the Riders to a Grey Cup title last year, just his second with the CFL club. Taman certainly did his part, not only hiring Chamblin as head coach in 2012 but strengthening Saskatchewans 13 roster by acquiring slotback Geroy Simon -- the leagues all-time leading receiver -- from the B.C. Lions, hiring George Cortez as offensive co-ordinator and dipping into free agency to add such proven veterans as defensive linemen Ricky Foley and John Chick and defensive back Dwight Anderson. Saskatchewan finished second in the West Division with an 11-7 record -- Calgary was first with a league-best 14-4 record -- before downing B.C. 29-26 in the conference semifinal. That set up a showdown with the Stampeders at McMahon Stadium that the Riders won 35-13. "Everyone has the notion that we went all-in last year and were very aggressive and thats very true. But this year is no different. Were driven to win in this business and this organization has been very successful over the last while and were going to continue to strive to do that." Taman, a native of Saskatoon, has been the Riders general manager since 2010 and his previous deal was set to expire following the 2015 campaign. "Obviously its a real special day for me to do this," Taman said. "I wanted to be here for a while and in this business thats not always the easiest thing to do. "Any good organization has sound, consistent relationships at the top. Jim is a great leader, we have a really good relationship, we have an open dialogue all the time. Hes a huge part of our success in this whole organization." Taman also praised the work of player-personnel director Craig Smith, football research and development co-ordinator Terry Baskier and assistant GM Jeremy ODay. Taman went so far as to say ODay -- a former Riders offensive lineman -- will be a CFL general manager one day. "Im so fortunate to work with him," Taman said. "Hes such a bright guy.
