NEW YORK Dennis Schroder Jersey , Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks traded mildly higher by midday Friday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average above its milestone level of 16,000 points after a lower opening, and the S& P 500 hitting the 1,800-point level.
By midday, the blue-chip Dow rose 19.07 points, or 0.12 percent, to 16,029.06. The broader S&P 500 gained 5.66 points, or 0.32 percent, to 1,801.51. The Nasdaq Composite Index added 18.61 points, or 0.47 percent, to 3,987.76.
On the previous trading day, the Dow settled above 16,000 points for the first time, propelled by encouraging signs of an improving U.S. job market.
The number of Americans who initially applied for jobless benefits last week dropped to the lowest level in almost two months, the Labor Department reported Thursday.
Both the Dow and the S&P 500 are on track for their seventh consecutive week of gains.
In corporate news, Intel Corp. shares dropped 4.87 percent to trade at 24.01 U.S. dollars a share at midday Friday, a day after the chip-maker said its revenue in 2014 is expected to be flat.
Two Chinese companies began trading on U.S. stock markets on Friday.
500 Limited, a leading online sports lottery service provider in China, started trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol "WBAI." Its shares opened at 20.00 dollars a share, compared to its initial public offering (IPO) price of 13. 00 dollars per American Depositary Share (ADS).
The other Chinese firm, Sungy Mobile Limited, opened for trading at 14.11 dollars per share, up from its IPO price of 11.22 dollars per ADS. Its shares were traded on the NASDAQ Global Market under the symbol "GOMO."
JOHANNESBURG, June 9 (Xinhua) -- The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) closed 1.12 percent lower on Thursday as the market digest Wednesday's gross domestic product (GDP) shock.
At close of session, the all share was 1.12 percent lower at 53,353.87 and the blue-chip top 40 dropped 1.13 percent.
Losses were broad based, with resources losing 2.87 percent and platinum retreating 0.62 percent. Financials were down 0.66 percent.
